The Cup of Excellence (CoE) is marking its 25th anniversary with a series of events and seminars during the Specialty Coffee Expo in Chicago. Over the past quarter-century, CoE has revolutionized the coffee industry with its rigorous competition and online auction system. The stringent scoring protocols and sample preparation techniques established by CoE have become industry standards, promoting a common vocabulary for coffee quality. The competition has had a significant impact on coffee-producing countries, elevating the profile of specific farmers and enabling roasters to sell these exceptional coffees at premium prices. With nearly 200 competitions across 16 countries, the CoE has seen tens of thousands of coffee entries, resulting in over 5,254 winning lots and generating over $80 million in auction sales. This has greatly benefited the participating farmers and spurred improvements in coffee quality, regional recognition, and farmer-roaster relationships.
