The 2024 Cup of Excellence competition in Costa Rica saw an unprecedented achievement with 11 coffees scoring over 90 points, highlighting the exceptional quality of the region's coffee. The competition was divided into three categories: traditional washed, semi-washed/honey/naturally processed, and experimental coffees. This categorization allowed jurors to better understand and appreciate the diverse flavor profiles of the entries. Washed coffees were noted for their bright acidity and fruity notes, while honey and naturally processed coffees exhibited a silky body and complex mixtures of tropical and dried fruits. Experimental coffees pushed boundaries with well-balanced acidity, long aftertaste, and hints of vanilla and caramel. The honey and naturally processed category was particularly competitive, with all 16 winners scoring over 88 points. The categorization system also enabled producers from lesser-known regions, like Turrialba, to showcase their quality coffee, making the competition more inclusive. The winning coffees will be available for purchase starting 25 July, with national winners being sold between 22-26 July. Limited sample boxes are available, and roasters are advised to order by 26 June.
